"Every yogi should practice Yin." 🛑

I saw this recently and felt a familiar bracing in my own body. It’s a common narrative in the wellness world—the idea that deep, passive stretching is the "medicine" we all need.

The Narrative vs. The Reality:

For years, I was the "perfect" student for this style of yoga. I wasn't formally trained in Yin, but because I lacked training in active stretching and hypermobility contraindications, I naturally gravitated toward "sinking" into shapes.

I was praised for my flexibility. I was even asked to teach 90-minute deep stretch classes because I looked the part. I’ll be honest: I enjoyed the ego-boost. I truly believed my ability to collapse into a joint—like sliding my hands flat under my feet in a forward fold—was a sign of progress.

The "Micro-bend" Myth:

I was taught to keep a "micro-bend" in my knees to avoid locking out, but that was the extent of the safety training I received. Even with that tiny bend, I was still damaging my low back and sacrum because I was folding from a place of structural instability rather than muscular support.

Why "One Size Fits All" is Dangerous:

When we hear that everyone needs Yin, we are ignoring the nuance of the human body:

  1. Hyper mobility: If your collagen is already lax, "loading the connective tissue" can lead to permanent joint instability, not resilience.

  2. Proprioception: If your brain can't "map" where your joints are, long passive holds can trigger a survival response (threat) rather than a relaxation response.

  3. Somatic Bypassing: We cannot "stretch" our way out of trauma-held bracing. Forcing a release can bypass our nervous system's protective boundaries.

Sober Judgment:

My practice is no longer about "Shape Duplication." It is about Stability over Flexibility. I have traded the ego-boost of deep folds for the quiet reclamation of Internal Awareness.

In this sanctuary, we value your autonomy over prescriptive yoga "rules." You are the highest authority on your own body. 🌿
